For the first time ever, THE Benjamin Vedder, inventor of the VESC ('V' in VESC stands for Vedder) and his team have collaborated on any Funwheel/Single-wheeled/ Balance-wheel product. The VESCxFUN BMS or VFBMS32
We collaborated with Benjamin and team to design an official VESC BMS for the balance wheel world. There are 3 primary reasons that we undertook this endeavor and improved on our previous smart (Bluetooth-only) BMS.
Improved Safety:
The new charge-only VF BMS talks to your ESC via CANBUS, sending and receiving real-time data and ensuring your ride is within the safe limits. It has multiple ways of warning you, and also induce pushback if configured to do so, yet no way of forcing the board to stop, since its a charge-only BMS. The ability to reliably talk to the ESC is a huge bump in safety and put your Funwheels as the safest boards in the world.

Since Benjamin decided about a decade ago to have VESC as open-source, and free for everyone, there have been 100s of companies that have benefitted from his work for free (including us with our ESCs!), without much monetary attribution in most cases to Benjamin's VESC company. With the official VESC BMS, every BMS you buy, you will be supporting the VESC team directly!

I paid full price for this BMS, which is expected. 250$ I believe, when I received my order I was missing the “included” wiring and thermistor. Hard to install with out that, I emailed fungineers, they responded quickly with a reply saying they’d send it out as soon as it was available… this didn’t inspire a lot of confidence with me, so I ordered my own leads from Ali express. Nearly a month later, I haven’t received the wiring AND I’ve followed up with them. -1 star there.
Next was the BMS. Design wise, it’s larger than the competitors similarly priced smart 32s BMS. Whatever… this time it wasn’t an issue. Smaller than cheaper BMS, so we’ll say medium sized. The whole “short the cells you aren’t using” paired with almost no documentation is frustrating, but fortunately for me, I’ve was doing a 32s install. Next thing…I’ve got 1 temp sensor installed, I input that I’ve got 1, it reads said sensor. It also reads the two BMS temp sensors; all good right? Well it’s also showing 3 other temp sensors at -25*c, another at -300*c. It’s more than a visual annoyance, you have to set your allowable bottom end charging below the -25*c to allow charging, this just bypasses a safety feature, don’t love that either. At least you can bypass the min temp with a toggle in the settings, hilarious. -1 star
At this point you might be thinking, this is only a true 4star BMS if you remove the Customer service aspect right? Well there is one more insanely annoying feature this BMS has, and it gets its own star… the beeping. When it’s fully charged, plugged into the charger, AND you aren’t connected to the app, it double beeps, about every 2-3secs. Sure I’ve built at least a dozen, if not more, vesc boards, and I can live with it. But if this was a customers board, the constant questioning and anxiety this would create is why it gets its own star… -1 star.
2 star rating from an experienced builder, for a 250$ BMS… probably should avoid this one and pick up a 4v dionne BMS
